I guess I never realized it before, but it was on my last trip to Dallas that I realized that DFW minimum connection times have been trending lower over the past 5 to 10 years. The Dallas-Fort Worth airport may be intimidatingly huge, but it’s awfully efficient.
In my opinion (and personal experience), the minimum time for domestic to domestic connections at DFW is 40 minutes. If you’re connecting from an international flight to domestic flight, I wouldn’t be comfortable recommending anything less than 2 hours.
For those of you who enjoy living on the edge, you’ll be happy to know that you could probably even get away with shorter connection times (I’ll explain how in a moment). For those of you prone to stomach ulcers, I suggest adhering to the minimum connection times I stated above.
What is the minimum connection time for domestic flights at DFW?
As I’ve already mentioned, a connection time of 40 minutes is about as low as you can get at DFW. The problem is that it’s a huge airport, and even when taking advantage of the inter-terminal train, it takes a while to get from one end to the other. FYI, having a short connection time in Minneapolis is a problem for this exact same reason.
However, in my personal experience, it’s not very often that I’ll have a connecting flight at DFW which is at the opposite end of the airport.
Yes, it happens sometimes, but for the most part things are fairly well organized when it comes to domestic flights (especially if you’re flying the same airline).
What is the minimum connection time for international flights at DFW?
International flights at the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport are a bit more complicated. The good news is that most of them will arrive into Concourse D, which is conveniently connected with all of the other terminals. The bad news is that passport control and customs at DFW is notoriously slow at times, and it’s impossible to know how long it’s going to take to get through it all.
Connecting FROM an international flight
Even though I have already stated that 2 hours is the minimum time that you would need to connect from an international flight to a domestic flight at DFW, more is better. Whenever I find myself in that situation, I try for 5 hours. At least. Which is saying a lot considering that 4 hours is my minimum time for an international to domestic connection at SFO (an airport with a LOT more international traffic).
Not to scare you or anything, but it has taken me over 3 hours to get through passport control and customs at DFW before. I missed my connecting flight, but thankfully, American Airlines automatically put me on the next flight headed to my destination without any issues.
Not showing up for a flight because you were stuck in customs isn’t a big deal at DFW. The gate agents know what the situation is like in customs (whether it’s busy or not), and they’ll simply rebook you on the next flight if it looks like you’re stuck.
Connecting TO an international flight
Going from a domestic flight to an international flight at this airport is just as easy as it is going from a domestic flight to a domestic flight. All of the terminals at DFW are connected, meaning that you will not have to clear security to enter each one. That kind of simplicity is what makes it possible to do a short layover in Honolulu (among other busy US airports).
Once you clear one security checkpoint, you’ll have access to all terminals. Therefore, my claim of a 40 minute minimum connection time at DFW still holds firm when headed out on an international flight. It’s totally doable.
A brief overview of the terminal layout at the Dallas / Ft Worth International Airport (DFW)
DFW was one of the first major airports I ever experienced when I first started flying, and I still remember the feeling of awe once we landed and we are taxiing to the gate. DFW is the 2nd largest airport in the United States (in terms of overall land size), and it certainly feels like it once you’re inside trying to find your way around.
There are six terminals at the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport. They are all connected via walkways and a very convenient (and well-timed) above-ground train system.
Note: the minimum connection times that I’ve stated so far assume that you use the train instead of walking.
The reason why short connection times are ok at DFW
If the above-ground connection train didn’t exist, minimum connection times Dallas / Fort Worth would be triple (or even quadruple) what they are today. It’s the only way to get around the airport in a relatively quick manner, and it’s absolutely vital to take advantage of it whenever you’re faced with a very short layover.
Note that the train stations for each terminal are located in the center of the terminal on the second level. They are accessible by either an escalator or an elevator.
If you’re flying American Airlines, there’s another reason why short connection times are OK: they will usually hold the flight for you If they know that you are coming from a very tightly-timed connecting flight.
That doesn’t always work if there are many flights headed to your destination city, because they’ll just put you on the next one. If it’s the last flight of the day to your destination, they’ll usually hold it rather than incurring the expense of putting you up in a hotel for the night.
Travel time between all terminals at DFW
Looking back on my flight log, I flown into and out of DFW 36 times so far. I know a thing or two about the time it takes to traverse this massive airport. Let’s take a closer look at exactly how long it’ll take you to get from one concourse to another:
From Concourse A
- To anywhere within concourse A: 1-7 minutes to walk (4 minutes via the train)
- To concourse B: 10 minutes to walk, 5 minutes via the train
- To concourse C: 12 minutes to walk, 8 minutes via the train
- To concourse D: 14 minutes to walk, 10 minutes via the train
- To concourse E: 16 minutes to walk, 12 minutes via the train
- To concourse F: 15 minutes via the train
From Concourse B
- To anywhere within concourse B: 1-7 minutes to walk (4 minutes via the train)
- To concourse A: 10 minutes to walk, 5 minutes via the train
- To concourse C: 10 minutes to walk, 5 minutes via the train
- To concourse D: 12 minutes to walk, 8 minutes via the train
- To concourse E: 14 minutes to walk, 10 minutes via the train
- To concourse F: 14 minutes via the train
From Concourse C
- To anywhere within concourse C: 1-7 minutes to walk (4 minutes via the train)
- To concourse A: 12 minutes to walk, 8 minutes via the train
- To concourse B: 10 minutes to walk, 5 minutes via the train
- To concourse D: 10 minutes to walk, 5 minutes via the train
- To concourse E: 12 minutes to walk, 8 minutes via the train
- To concourse F: 13 minutes via the train
From Concourse D
- To anywhere within concourse D: 1-7 minutes to walk (4 minutes via the train)
- To concourse A: 14 minutes to walk, 10 minutes via the train
- To concourse B: 12 minutes to walk, 8 minutes via the train
- To concourse C: 10 minutes to walk, 5 minutes via the train
- To concourse E: 10 minutes to walk, 5 minutes via the train
- To concourse F: 12 minutes via the train
From Concourse E
- To anywhere within concourse E: 1-7 minutes to walk (4 minutes via the train)
- To concourse A: 16 minutes to walk, 12 minutes via the train
- To concourse B: 14 minutes to walk, 10 minutes via the train
- To concourse C: 12 minutes to walk, 8 minutes via the train
- To concourse D: 10 minutes to walk, 5 minutes via the train
- To concourse F: 6 minutes via the train
From Concourse F
- To anywhere within the F concourse: 1-5 minutes (it’s small)
- To concourse A: 15 minutes via the train
- To concourse B: 14 minutes via the train
- To concourse C: 13 minutes via the train
- To concourse D: 12 minutes via the train
- To concourse E: 6 minutes via the train
Please note that these are just estimates based on my own personal experience. Yes, you may be able to shave a few minutes off of these times if you’re hyped up on caffeine.
You may also find these times impossible if you’ve got several frustrated children in tow. Use these estimates as a general guide, and adjust accordingly based on your specific situation.
What is the ideal connection time at DFW?
I’ve talked a lot about best case scenario connection time so far, so it’s only fitting that I talk about what an ideal connection time at DFW would be like (for me anyway).
If I could have it my way (that never happens lol), I want a minimum of a 2 hour layover. Especially since airlines aren’t serving very much food these days, and getting something to eat in the terminal is usually important. That won’t be very likely to happen with a 40 minute connection.
In terms of coming off an international flight and connecting to a domestic flight, having 5 hours would put me at ease. This would give me ample time to absorb any delays going through customs. It would also allow me to grab a bite to eat before my connecting flight at a relatively gentle pace. Ain’t no fun cramming a greasy slice of pizza into your face as you’re running to the gate!
Tips for making really short connections at DFW
Don’t worry. It’s really easy to feel intimidated bye the massive size of the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport. Heck – my butt cheeks still clench up a little every time I step foot in the place. Here are some tips for getting through it if you have a very short connection time:
- First and foremost, relax! If you’re flying American Airlines, you’re very well protected. They’ll automatically put you on the next flight to your destination (you won’t even have to ask them to do it). DFW is one of American Airlines largest and most active hubs, and there’s nearly always another flight going to the place you need to go. If there’s not, don’t worry – they’ll put you up in a hotel for the night and you’ll be on the first flight out in the morning.
- Use the inter-terminal train. It’s the fastest way to get around the DFW airport – even within the individual terminals (each terminal has two stops).
- Have a good understanding of the terminal layout before you arrive. Showing up as a hot sweaty mess with absolutely no clue as to what you need to do is a fantastic way to ruin a trip.
- Avoid late afternoon flights in the summertime if possible. The Dallas-Fort Worth area is notorious for severe weather which can disrupt flight operations from April to September. I know this because I’ve lived this. Several times. And it’s extremely annoying.

Dear Scott,
I just traveled from Tokyo to San Francisco via Dallas. I cannot thank you enough for writing this excellent article. I was supposed to have 1 hr 50 minutes at DFW to make the connection from International (D) to domestic terminal (A). My flight from Tokyo got delayed by 40 minutes. But the immigration was fastest I have ever seen, literally 2 minutes with a very friendly officer, the bag recheck was smooth and efficient, so was the security. I am most grateful to the security officer who looked up the departure gate on his phone, walked me to the escalator to skylink and made sure I got on it. Needless to say, I made my flight as they were boarding with just enough time to use the restroom.
My first time at DFW and it is way up high on my favorites. Thank you for your detailed instructions. Couldn’t have done without it.
Rose
Scott (SANspotter)
I’m happy to know everything went smoothly Rose! DFW is a massive (often intimidating) airport, but with enough planning, it’s easy to move through at a relatively quickly pace. Glad I was able to help!
Madeleine
Wow! Your detailed information is so helpful! I’m looking at American Airlines domestic flights, and the website is pointing out the less-than-an-hour connection times at DFW between the flights that they’re putting together. I know DFW is huge, but after reading your article and realizing both flights should be coming in & going out of the same terminal (right?), I think we should be okay:)
Scott (SANspotter)
Glad you found this useful Madeleine! DFW is big, but you likely will not have any issues with a layover of less than an hour. Make sure to take advantage of the inter-terminal train if you need to change terminals. It’s fast (and easy)!
michelle
hi scott just like to know if 1hour and 55minutes layover in dfw to houston is enough?..we’ll be flying international flight and our layover will be in dfw..hope you could reply my queries..thank you
Scott (SANspotter)
Hi Michelle – yes, 1 hour and 55 minutes will be enough time. There won’t be a lot of time to waste, but if you keep moving you should be ok. Have a great trip!
Raphael
Hi Scott, Thanks for your article. Due to a cancellation, my travel agency is proposing me to transit via DFW; flying in from Phoenix, arriving à 7:51 pm and taking off to Paris at 9:05 pm. I am concerned about this short lay over time (1:14 minutes); is that ok to transfer and clear custom ?
Scott (SANspotter)
Hi Raphael – 1 hour and 14 minutes will be plenty of time since you will not have to go through passport control, customs, or even a general security checkpoint. You’ll be able to walk directly from your inbound PHX flight to your outbound CDG flight without having to do anything. Have a great trip!
Anne
Super helpful blog! I’ll be flying back from Cozumel to ATL via DFW in about 10 days. I chose it for the home arrival time (10pm) but it’s only a 1 hr 40 min layover to connect, at 5 pm, on a Thursday, with a terminal change. Is this feasible in DFW if I don’t have luggage, only a carryon? I’m not young so won’t be doing any sprinting. I do have a changeable ticket and connect in Miami with a 3 hour layover, arriving only 30 min later (and for a little more $). Going by your advice, seems like it’s worth it to change to Miami? (Then I might even pack a bag). TIA
Scott (SANspotter)
Hi Anne – the problem with Miami is that the time it takes to get through customs and immigration varies more than it does in DFW. MIA sees an influx of arrivals from Europe and Latin America multiple times a day, and when that happens, things get backed up. DFW doesn’t have as many international arrivals, so it’s (usually) not as chaotic. I’d stick with DFW if I were you. 1 hour and 40 minutes is enough time IMHO, and if everything is running on time there will be no sprinting required. Have a good trip!
Jennifer
Travelling next week with a 46 minute layover. I’m a bit concerned. But I’m also somewhat familiar with DFW. I’ll ask the flight attendant if they know the connecting gate to maybe give me a headstart when I fly out of the jetway. I’m using Am Airlines both legs of the trip, so this makes me feel a bit better.
Scott (SANspotter)
Yeah sometimes they will announce the connecting gates just prior to landing. Even if they don’t, you’ll be fine! And be sure to take advantage of the inter-terminal train if you will be arriving and departing from separate terminals.
Faith
I’m so glad I found this! AA has changed our flight for next month twice already. We originally had a comfortable 2 hour layover at DFW, but now we have less than an hour. I was very concerned, but feel a lot better about it now. We’ll have our kids with us, but they can run if need be, and I guess I’ll just need to pack some filling snacks!
Scott (SANspotter)
Yeah, you’ll be fine as long as you’re flying American Airlines. You likely won’t even have to run, as I’ve made plenty of gnarly sub 1 hour connections at DFW without even breaking a sweat. Have a great trip!
Natalia
HI!
I’m flying with AA soon from an international flight, I’ll have a connection flight at DFW, and then I’ll go to Phoenix. Do you know if I’ll have to move my luggage to another place? Should I pick it up right after customs, or just head to my gate?
Scott (SANspotter)
You’ll pick it up right before going through customs. Immediately after customs, there will be an AA baggage re-check area. Check your bag in there, and proceed to your gate. Have a good flight!
Donna Norris
i am going to have only 55 minute layover on domestic flight to tampa. i am disabled and worried requested wheelchair will not be there, as it has happened twice before!
Scott (SANspotter)
Hi Donna! Make sure you tell the flight attendants you’ll need a wheelchair and that you have a tight connection. Tell them as you board the plane, remind them during the flight, and then remind them again just before landing. They can call ahead to make sure that your wheelchair will be ready. Bribe them with cookies if you have to. 🙂 Good luck!
Karen
I am traveling to Thailand from Orland and first stop is at DFW from Orlando before flying off to Tokyo. My time from landing at DFW to taking off for Tokyo is only one hour. Should this be enough time? Should I not check a bag and instead do only carry on?
Scott (SANspotter)
Hi Karen – one hour will be plenty of time, since you won’t have to go through any additional security checks before boarding your flight to Tokyo. After arriving from Orlando, simply walk to the gate of your connecting flight (you can take the inter-terminal train if you need to change terminals). Also, 1 hour will be plenty of time for them to transfer your bags. Have a good trip!
Karen
Thanks Scott! On the way back I fly into DFW from Tokyo. I have a 2 hour 20 minute layover before my flight back to Orlando. I read coming in to DFW from an international flight and then transferring to a domestic could be quite a bit longer. Unfortunately this is the only flight I can find so I’m hoping it will be enough time.
Scott (SANspotter)
Hey Karen – I wouldn’t worry too much about it. That’s an itinerary that I’d book without any worries, and most likely, it’ll be more than enough time.
Fidel Prieto
Dear Scott,
Great article we have a domestic connection 48 minutes through DFW via American Airlines to Charlotte NC in early October. My question I’m assuming the train connecting terminals goes in both directions and that there will be signs pointing you in direction.
Scott (SANspotter)
Hi Fidel – yes, the train does run both directions and it’s very clearly marked. But even if you do end up getting on a train going in the wrong direction, just get off at the next terminal and get back on a train headed the other way. Have a good trip!
Zach
Hey Scott, Looking at a flight from Philly to Cabo via DFW. American the whole way. Looks right now like I would be looking at 45 minutes from landing to takeoff. Am I crazy to think I can make that layover happen?
Scott (SANspotter)
Hey Zach – not crazy at all, but it will be tight. All terminals at DFW are connected airside (behind security), so all you’ll have to do is go from one plane to the next. And if it makes you feel any better, I’ve done plenty of 45 minute connections at DFW without issues. Go for it!
Darrin
Hi Scott, great article. We’re flying in from Boston to DFW with a 1 hour connection to Palm Springs with AA. I originally had longer but AA has changed our flights. I’m satisfied now, thanks to your article, that this is enough time. However, do you have any advice on the shorter connection time for checked luggage? (We’re international visitors) I understand that getting your checked luggage at the moment is an issue everywhere, but just wondering if the shorter connection time will impact us arriving at PSP without our luggage? Thanks
Scott (SANspotter)
Hey Darrin – glad this overview helped to alleviate some of your concerns! I haven’t heard of widespread lost/late luggage issues here in the US. Of course there is always a risk of your luggage not making the connection, but it definitely hasn’t been as bad here in the US as it has in other parts of the world. I think you’ll be ok!
Chris Blunt
Hi Scott, flying AA from Dtw to Puerto Vallarta have 1hr 8 min to change terminals I believe C to B or A not sure is time ok, great site very helpfull
Scott (SANspotter)
Hey Chris – yeah, 1 hour and 8 minutes will be a piece of cake (even if you have to change terminals). Have fun!
Michelle Rutherfurd
Hi Scott, this is such an insightful article! Just wondering if you think that 2 hours and 40 minutes is long enough for an international layover? I’m coming from New Zealand and have the layover before my next flight to Philadelphia. On the off chance that I DO miss my flight due to customs.. do American Airlines charge you any additional fees for the rebooking..? I’m just a bit nervous that’s all!
Scott (SANspotter)
Thanks Michelle! Yeah, you’ve got nothing to worry about. 3 hours is more than enough time for an international to domestic connection at DFW. There’s a whole lot that is going to have to go wrong for you to miss your connecting flight.
If your entire itinerary from New Zealand to Philadelphia is all part of the same ticket, you’ll be fully protected if you arrive at DFW too late to make your connecting flight.
I highly recommend downloading and using the American Airlines mobile app during your trip, since that will be where you will be able to see what flight they have rebooked you on in case of a misconnect. And no, you won’t have to pay anything if they rebook you.
On the other hand, if your flight from New Zealand to Dallas and Dallas to Philadelphia are two separate tickets, American Airlines won’t be able to do anything for you if you don’t show up for your scheduled flight to Philadelphia. You will have to pay to be rebooked in this case.
Anyway, no need to be nervous – have a great trip!
AR
Great post! Do the rules for connecting TO an international flight change if you’re not an international citizen? Or they remain the same? I am hoping to travel NYC –> DFW –> SYD but i’m not a US citizen. I’ve read that you clear customs and immigration at your first entry point to the US (so in this case it would be NYC) but then ive read elsewhere you clear customs/immigration at the first place you LAND (so would i have to clear customs/immigration again at DFW?). would you be able to clarify this to me? Thanks again for this amazing post! Hope to hear from you.
Scott (SANspotter)
Hi! Since you’ll be coming from another US city, there will be no need to go through customs and immigration when you arrive at DFW. Simply go to your connecting flight – which is really easy at DFW since all gates can be reached behind the security checkpoint.
FYI, the only scenario where you’d have to go through customs and immigration at DFW before continuing on to SYD would be if you were coming in on a flight anywhere outside the US. Have a good trip!
Jeremiah
Hi Scott we are flying from Louisville to DFW then on to Durango Mexico. The layover time in DFW is only 55 minutes…is that enough time to board the Durango flight? We have people picking us up in Durango so want to make sure we don’t miss our flight. Thanks
Scott (SANspotter)
Hi Jeremiah – yes, you should be ok with a 55 minute layover. There are no additional security checks to go from a domestic to international flight at DFW, so as long as you don’t waste time, you shouldn’t have any issues. Have fun!
DN
Hi Scott. Thanks for the article. Some really great and insightful information. I saw your response to AR’s question on September 14. I’m planning on traveling LGA to MEL via DFW. I understand that LGA does not have immigration facilities, so it would be a domestic flight to DFW, then international from DFW to MEL. My itinerary shows 1 hour stopover in DFW. (I’d be coming in from LGA on Qantas/codeshare AA, and departing DFW on Qantas. Are you able to advise whether that is enough time to go through immigration/customs at DFW to make the flight to MEL? Thanks in advance for any information
Scott (SANspotter)
Hi! You won’t have to worry about going though customs and immigrations at all – it’s not required when leaving the US on an international flight. Once you pass through security at LGA, you’re cleared all the way to MEL. Upon arrival at DFW, head straight for your connecting flight – there will be no additional security checkpoints (or customs/immigration) that you’ll have to go through. You will have to go through Australian customs and immigration when you land at MEL of course.
1 hour will be plenty of time at DFW. There’s a train that connects all terminals that can speed up the process if you’re feeling crunched for time, but you shouldn’t have any problems. Have a good trip!
David
Brilliant. Thanks for the quick and informative advice Scott. It is very much appreciated.
Scott (SANspotter)
You’re very welcome David – glad this helped.
Jul
Hi Scott. Great article. I will be flying from Bogota to Los Angeles. I have a connection in DFW. I have 1hour 30 min between the arrived time and departure time. is it enough time ?. Also, because I should do immigration and go to the gate.
By the way, my both flights are American Airlines
Thank you
Scott (SANspotter)
Hi Jul – 1 hour and 30 minutes will be a little tight, but as long as the lines at passport control and customs at DFW are moving, you shouldn’t have any issues. I wouldn’t worry about it. Have a good trip!
Ebony
This articleis insanely helpful!! Many many blessings to you!
Scott (SANspotter)
Thanks Ebony! DFW can seem like an intimidating airport if you’re not familiar with it, so I’m glad this helped to alleviate some of your concerns. Happy travels!
Robby
Flying for first time in January 2023. And I am going international. I fly from Birmingham to DFW then to Tokyo. My layover in DFW is only 1 hr and 16 minutes. Will I be able to make the flight after landing and taxi in?
Scott (SANspotter)
Hi Robby – yes, that will be plenty of time. You won’t have to go though any additional security or customs checks upon arrival in DFW, so it will be a matter of simply walking from one plane to the next. Have a good flight!
Marie
Hi Scott, thanks for the article! Similar to Robby‘s question: I will fly from Frankfurt to DFW (Terminal D) then to Cancun with AA. Do I need to go through passport control? Or directly to the gate at DFW? Thanks.
Scott (SANspotter)
Hi Marie! Yes, you will need to pass through customs and immigration upon arrival at DFW. All passengers arriving in the US must do this – even if you are continuing on to an international destination. Enjoy Cancun
Paul
Hey, great info here!
I leave Ft Lauderdale and connect to a flight to Seoul at DFW on December 29th.
Only have a 49min layover, and need to transfer from terminal C to D. Is this time doable?
Scott (SANspotter)
Hey Paul – that’ll be really fast and easy! It’ll probably take just as much time to walk from C to D as it would to take the train, but either way will take hardly any time at all. C to D is a quick transfer (you won’t have to go through security again), so you’ve got nothing to worry about. Have a great flight!
Barbara
Hi Scott,
Thank you for your blog! We are flying from Belize City into DFW with an 1 hour 40 minute layover to Syracuse. We have Global Entry, should I be concerned?
Scott (SANspotter)
Hi Barbara! You shouldn’t have any issues with Global Entry – that’ll be an easy connection to make. Have fun in Belize!
Steve
Hi Scott,
I am arriving at DFW from CDG on Air France at 1:30pm I am looking to book an AA domestic flight back to SDF at 4:30pm. Is this enough time? There will be 5 total passengers, 3 with checked baggage. We will have to go back through TSA and recheck the bags, then get to the gate. Is 3 hours enough time, given we are on award tickets with AF but paid tickets on AA? Also hoping to hit the Centurion lounge for a quick meal if possible. You think this is doable?
Scott (SANspotter)
Hey Steve – yes, three hours is easily enough time (though I would consider you lucky if you end up having enough time left over for a meal in the lounge). Having to check in for your AA flights will add extra steps to the process, but I have no doubt that you’ll be able to pull it off.
Alex
Hi Scott. First of all, thank you for this excellent post.
I have a question concerning a flight I’m booking from Madrid (MAD) to Auckland (AKL) via DFW. I know that I’ll have to go thru customs and immigration, but I’m not sure if I’ll have get my luggage or AA will do it for me. The planned layover is 2h45m, is it enough? The entire itinerary is with AA.
Thanks
Scott (SANspotter)
You’re very welcome Alex! Yes, you will have to retrieve your luggage before you go through customs at DFW. There is a baggage drop to re-check your bags immediately after going through customs though, so at least you won’t have to lug them all the way to the AA ticket counter. 2 hours and 45 minutes will be plenty of time. Have a good trip!
Mit
Great article! Settled a little off my nerves! I’m travelling from London through Dallas to Cancun but only have an hour and 45 mins layover. Is this enough time? I don’t think it will be
Scott (SANspotter)
Hi Mit – it’ll be tight, but if everything goes smoothly, you’ll make it with time to spare. It’s also a good idea to study the terminal map before you go so you’ll have an idea of what you need to do when you get there.
Katy
Great and thoughtful article! Thank you! Traveling from Nashville to DFW to Cancun with a 40 min layover. Not too concerned with making ME making the connecting flight as I am with checked luggage! What has your experience been with layover times and checked baggage? Are you familiar with AA policy if the baggage doesn’t make the connecting flight? Thank you again for your great write up!
Scott (SANspotter)
Hey Katy – yeah, 40 minutes will be easy. You’ll have to hustle, but there should be no issues. I honestly don’t know what AA’s policy is on checked bags at the moment, but I wouldn’t worry too much about it. 30 minute connections are legal at DFW, and they’ve pretty much got the logistics of moving bags from one plane to another in a short amount of time down to a science. I’d actually be shocked if your bags don’t make it all the way to Cancun with you. Enjoy your trip!
Ella Weerdenburg
Hey Scott, thanks for writing such an insightful article! I’m flying AA from Auckland to Costa Rica in November, with a layover in DFW. AA have since changed my flight time from AKL to DFW, and I will now only have a 1 hour layover (9am – 10am). I take it I will have to collect my luggage and clear customs before going to my gate, and that this is therefor not going to be enough time to make my second flight?
Scott (SANspotter)
Hi Ella – you’re very welcome! 1 hour isn’t going to be enough time unfortunately. There’s no way you will make it through passport control and customs in that amount of time – especially considering that you will have to retrieve your checked luggage.
Get in touch with American Airlines to change your connecting flight ASAP!
Melissa S
If you are flying American Airlines to the Dallas Airport and the connecting flight to Texas is with American Airlines will it be in the same terminal?
Both are small planes (like 2 seats on each side of the row.
Scott (SANspotter)
Hi Melissa – there’s no guarantee that you won’t have to change terminals, but it’s not a big deal if you do. All terminals at DFW are connected and you can walk (or take the train) between them without having to go through any security checkpoints. It’s fast and easy.
Aaron S.
I just booked flying American from Cedar Rapids to Dallas then Dallas to San Francisco. I have a 40 minute layover time. Will this be enough time? I don’t know which gates yet, as my trip is in early mid May. I also have been to DFW once before, and taken the train which is very helpful. But I have never connected in DFW. Thanks!
Scott (SANspotter)
Hi Aaron – yes, 40 minutes will be tight, but it’s totally doable. Take the train if you have to switch terminals (it’ll be a lot faster than walking). You’ll make it!
Miguel Sanchez
Hello Scott. I have an international (mexico) to international (Vancouver) flight this June with a 2:15 hour layover in DFW during the evening. Do you think I would be OK considering the summer and evening rushes in customs? Do I have to pickup my checked bags after customs or go straight to board the connecting flight? I also have the option to schedule the connecting flight to next day’s morning and spend the night in a hotel near DFW. What would you suggest? Thank you in advance.
Scott (SANspotter)
Hi Miguel – you will have to go through customs and immigration upon arrival at DFW (which will require you to retrieve your luggage). 2:15 should be enough time, and if it were me, I’d stick with it instead of overnighting at DFW.
It’s hard to tell how long it will take to get through, but things will have to go very wrong if 2:15 isn’t enough. Good luck!

Hi Scott,
Thanks for the detailed review , would like your thoughts on a 40 minutes connecting time on AA ,traveling from Miami and going to Champaign, IL both flights are on AA.It will be the last flight , I we don’t make it will have to stay over night
Scott (SANspotter)
Hi Danish, you’ll be perfectly fine with 40 minutes (especially considering that it’s the last flight of the day). Trust me – they’d rather hold the flight for a few extra minutes to give everyone time to arrive rather than paying for hotel rooms. You’ll make it!
Emma
Hi Scott
We are travelling from London to Las Vegas via Dallas we only have 80 mins now as flights have been changed. All flights are with AA so I am hopping we don’t have to collect luggage .. I know we have to clear customs and immigration in Dallas as our first point on entry but found you talk we thought the process as not done any connection flight before thank you
Scott (SANspotter)
Hi Emma – yes, you will actually need to retrieve and then recheck your luggage before getting to your connecting flight.
Upon arrival in Dallas, the first thing you do is go through passport control. Then, you’ll have to retrieve your luggage from the baggage carousel. Once you’ve done that, you’ll need to go through customs. Immediately after customs, you’ll have to recheck your bag with American Airlines.
It sounds like a very complicated process, but 80 minutes will more than likely be enough time.
If it’s not, don’t worry. There are many (many!) flights between Dallas and Las Vegas on any given day, so they’ll just put you on the next one if you get hung up during the customs and immigration process. Have a great trip!
Mary
Hi Scott,
Firstly, thank you for the helpful article. It helps me calm some of my nerves as I have a connecting flight from Dallas.
We will be travelling from LGA to Dallas to Melbourne. The flight from LGA to Dallas is via Qantas codeshare AA flight and from Dallas to Melbourne is via Qantas airlines. We have a 2 hour layover in Dallas airport.
Are you able to advise if 2 hour layover is sufficient?
Do we need to collect our luggage and recheck again and go through custom in Dallas airport?
Thank in advance for your advice.
Scott (SANspotter)
Hi Mary – 2 hours will be more than enough time! The entire process is a lot easier than you think, as you won’t have to do anything at DFW but walk (or take the train) to your connecting flight. There are no additional security checks to go through, and you will not have to retrieve/re-check your luggage.
You’ll get your DFW-MEL boarding pass when you check in at LGA, and your bags will automatically transfer. Have a good trip!
JOHN
scott
i am booking 7 flights from phx to costa rica in july
the fare schedule shows a 40 minute connection time
is that enough time
Scott (SANspotter)
Hey John – yeah, if it’s all the same airline (I’m assuming American?), then it’s a totally doable connection. That said, it’s going to be stressful – especially if your inbound flight is even a few minutes late. I personally wouldn’t book it unless it was your only option.
Brenda
Hi Scott- thank you the article. It’s helpful.
I am considering booking a flight from NYC to Hawaii in August connecting in Dallas. Is one hour 40 min enough time? how concern should I be with summer thunderstorms? Thanks!
Scott (SANspotter)
You’re very welcome Brenda! Yeah, 1:40 will be more than enough time to make a connection to Hawaii out of DFW. You’ll have no worries about that. You also shouldn’t have to worry too much about weather. Of course there is always a chance that you’ll be delayed a bit because of a storm, but things have to get really bad before everything starts unraveling at DFW.
Besides, DFW is probably one of the best airports in the US to be at if you’re facing a delay or cancellation. It’s a busy place, and they’ll find a way to get you there no matter what happens. Have a good trip!
Carla
Hi ..thank you so much for yr article. AA has changed my flights twice (so far) for a Sept. trip this year. Flying ABQ to Dallas then with a 50 minute connection to Envoy Air/American Eagle to Santa Rosa (STS). Going w carryon. I am concerned about connection time. Do I understand correctly that I will go from Terminal A to Terminal B and that it’s doable? It’s the only direct flight from Dallas to Santa Rosa. Thanks Scott.
Scott (SANspotter)
You’re very welcome Carla! It’s too soon to know what terminals you will be flying in and out of, but a 50 minute connection at DFW on American Airlines is super easy. Walking from one terminal to the next takes 5-10 minutes, but you can go across the entire airport in 10-15 minutes using the inter-terminal train.
I’ve done multiple 35-minute connections at DFW with ease, so you shouldn’t have any issues. Have a good trip!
Claudia
Hi Scott! Your article is very good. Congrats! I will be flying from Mexico City to Grand Island, NE with American Airlines. I have a layover in DFW. When I bought my ticket, it was a 5 hours layover between flights but they changed it yesterday to a 4 hours 15 minutes connection time (it got shorter). I am thinking of not check luggage, just carry-on and backpack. After passport control and customs…Will I have to do a security screening process before my next flight? I think the plane to Grand Island departs from Terminal E. One last question…Do you know if I still would have to remove my shoes and liquids? I have read that this proceeding is changing a little bit in some USA aiports. Thank you for your kind help!
Scott (SANspotter)
Hi Claudia! 4 hours and 15 minutes will still be more than enough time (even if you have checked luggage). You have absolutely nothing to worry about – you will make your connection with lots of time to spare.
And yes, you will have to go through security again to re-enter the terminal. This will require removing your shoes and any liquids from your carryon, but you’ll have plenty of time for this. Have a great trip!
Jc
Thank you for this!!!!! I just spent two hours on the phone with amex travel trying to rebook flights with American with no luck bc I was concerned about a 1 hour 10 min layover. Flying from Msy to dfw (land at 130pm) on AA and then dfw to Rome (on Iberia operated by American) at 231. Is this still considered “same airline”. Will have 2 small kids and 4 carrry ons in tow. Freaking out but feel a little better after reading your post.
Scott (SANspotter)
You’re very welcome Jc! You’ll be fine with a 1:10 layover, as you won’t need to go through any additional security checkpoints to reach the gate for your Iberia flight. You will very likely have to change terminals though, but it won’t take long if you take the inter-terminal train. Have a good trip!
Lexi
Thank you so much for this excellent post! I’ll be flying into DFW from Los Angeles and I have an hour and 30 minute connection before my flight to Alexandria, LA. A bit nervous as I have not traveled much before, do you think I could make the connection comfortably? I am also flying with American. Thanks in advance for your help!
Scott (SANspotter)
You’re very welcome Lexi! An hour and a half to make an American to American connection at DFW is about as easy as it gets. Yes, the Dallas / Ft Worth airport is big, but it’s extremely easy to navigate (even for a novice flyer).
And if for whatever reason you get confused / lost, there will be lots of airline and airport employees around who will be more than happy to point you in the right direction. Have a good trip!
Chen
Hi Scott! Thank you for your post, relax me a lot! I will fly tomorrow from New orleans to Dallas and then London, 1 h 14 mins to transfer. Just to confirm that I still need to go through passport-control right? Seems like I need to travel between terminal c to d, and both flights will be with American Airlines. I’m an expat and only have hand luggage. Thanks a lot!!
Scott (SANspotter)
Hi Chen! I was traveling yesterday when you posted this question, so this might not reach you in time. Sorry! But no – you won’t have to go through passport control at DFW. As a matter of fact, you won’t have to do anything but walk (or take the train) to the gate of your connecting flight.
Hope your trip went well!
Pekka
Hi Scott! Thanks for the article.
We (5 persons) are travelling from Helsinki to Dallas DFW (Finnair). Transfer time in DFW is 1:30 hours. Trip continues to Miami. Transfer time is 3:30. Then from Miami to Lima. DFW-Miami-Lima is with American Airlines. I guess in DFW we have to go through passport control, pick up our luggage, go through customs and re-check our luggage to the next flight. Can we check them from DFW straight to Lima? Is the transfer time in DFW enough?
Our return is Lima-Miami (Latam Airlines), transfer time 2:36. Miami-New York JFK (American Airlines), transfer time 2:20. JFK-Helsinki (Finnair). I guess same procedures are needed also in Miami. Is the transfer time there enough? Can we re-check our luggage straight from Miami to Helsinki?
Many thanks for your help!
Scott (SANspotter)
Hi Pekka – you’re very welcome. Sounds like an amazing trip you’ve got planned!
I’ll be honest. An hour and a half to do an international to domestic connection at DFW with checked luggage is going to be a challenge. It won’t be impossible, but you’re really going to need everything to go right in order to pull it off. The good news is that you will be able to re-check your bags all the way to Lima at DFW.
Your connection times on the way back sound much more manageable (you shouldn’t have any issues). And yes – you can check your luggage all the way to Helsinki in Miami.
Have a great trip!
Jejun
Hi Scott, I am planning to travel from YYC to DOH through DFW, both by Qatar Airways (the first flight will be operated by AA). Do you think 1 hour 25 minutes is sufficient to make the connection?
Scott (SANspotter)
Hi Jejun – definitely! Since you’ll be going through US customs and immigration prior to departing YYC, the only thing you’ll need to do when you arrive at DFW is walk to your connecting gate (no security checks required). You’ll have more than enough time.
Cathy
Hi Scott – this has been one of the most informative articles i have found about connecting through DFW. My family and I are planning an Alaska trip – we fly into DFW from MIA with roughly 1 hr 6 mins to connect. It’s the last flight to ANC for the day – do you think we’ll be alright?
Scott (SANspotter)
Hi Cathy – glad you found this helpful! Anyway, yes, an hour and 6 minutes will be more than enough time. DFW can seem intimidating, but I’ve found it to be one of the easiest airports in the US to connect through. Make sure to take advantage of the train if you need to switch concourses!
Also, have fun in Alaska – it’s been a while since I’ve been up there so I have to say that I’m more than a little jealous.
Dave B
Very helpful! Thanks, mate.
Scott (SANspotter)
You’re very welcome Dave!
Sheri
Hello, my flight home on AA from Guadalajara to Dallas has only a 2 hour layover before boarding my final leg to Raleigh-Durham. I’ve never flown internationally ALONE, and I am terrified I won’t have enough time to get through immigration and customs in time. Do you think two hours will be enough time? Thank you!
Scott (SANspotter)
Hi Sheri – you’ll be fine! 2 hours is almost always enough time to make a connection like that at DFW (even if you have checked luggage). Just know that you’ll probably use most of that time going through the entire process – but lots of stuff will have to go wrong for you to miss your flight.
Also, missing your flight won’t be the end of the world. DFW is a massive hub for American Airlines, and they’ll have many (many) other ways to get you to Raleigh ASAP.
If you do miss your flight, you’ll automatically be rebooked on another one (you won’t have to do anything). Make sure to download the American Airlines app to your phone before your trip, because this is where you will see (in real time) what flight they rebooked you on. If available, you might even be presented with a handful of other options to choose from. It’s very convenient.
Have a great trip!
Buck
My last 6 flights with American airlines left me stranded overnight at DFW. Last minute gate and terminal changes. I have never had an AA employee hold a gate open. Not there by 15 minutes before departure good luck. My last flight, we sat on the plane for about an hour then attendant said they had no legal pilot. Hmm DFW is one of AA’s main hubs. AA said they would provide transportation and hotel for us. Pointless, have one or two hours of sleep after waiting 2 hours in customer service line. AA have out $12 food vouchers. Keep in mind, DFW is a very large international airport. All the restaurants are closed by 9 pm. Only thing open was a 7/11 and they don’t accept the vouchers. Maybe they could of ordered pizza??? Hmm..that could ruin customer service expectations. Many people here also forget to mention taxi time to gate can be up to 30 minutes or more. All of my last 6 trips with AA had last minute schedule changes usually the day before. I always allow 2-3 hour layovers and when they make these changes they leave me 20-45 minute layovers. I can call and they will fix it. There goes 2 or more hours of time I can spend with family. It does show lack of customer service. I have had two phone agents tell me they would change it back to the original itinerary as a “courtesy”. All in all anyone that thinks AA and DFW care about passengers might as well pull that wool hat all the way down to the neck. From now on I will pay more to not deal with this crap from AA.
Scott (SANspotter)
Yeah, I’d be looking for other options as well if they stranded me 6 times in a row! That’s not good at all.
I’m to the point now where I won’t even stand in a “customer service” line if they cancel a flight and leave me stranded. AA will automatically rebook you on another flight, and this information can be accessed via the American Airlines App on your phone. They’ll even offer you several options if there are any available.
The last time this happened to me, I simply walked out of the airport (and paid for my own hotel) rather than stand 2-3 hours in a customer service line. I ain’t got time for that lol.
Leeniee
Retired gate agent here. True, the gate agent can see if there are people coming in from connections but the only time AA will hold a flight for connecting passengers is if there are a large number of passengers coming in for either an international flight or the last flight of the day and even then it’s not up to the agent only the Captain, manager or operations can make that decision. So please don’t advise your readers that the airline will hold the flight if they’re just one of a few misconnects, they won’t. They’d be holding flights all day long if that were the case and nothing would be on time. The agent will rebook late connecting passengers for the next available flight.
Scott (SANspotter)
Thanks for the clarification Leeniee – I was just going by what somebody had told me in the past. I appreciate the information! Hopefully this helps anyone here in the common section facing a similar situation.
Cathy Colt
Great tips & comments. Thank you
Any ideas on how to determine terminals before the flights? I’m flying Palm Springs to Buenos Aires via DFW with 1 hr 10 min connection, flying alone & seasoned traveler but at well over 70 y o the connection is starting to concern me
Scott (SANspotter)
You’re very welcome Cathy! The best way that I’ve found to determine what gates flights will be departing out of is to use the Flighty app (available for Apple iOS only).
It’s the only app that I’ve used which shows accurate gate information up to 36 hours before departure.
That said, an hour and 10 minutes is a very doable connection at DFW – even if your arriving flight and departing flights are located at opposite ends of the airport.
You’ve got nothing to worry about. Have a great trip!
Juliet
love this article!
I am traveling from RDU TO DFW TO HOBBY, I fly with the same airline company (AA)
my question is whether I have to go through the security check also at DFW TO HOBBY? I have a very short layover (55) and am afraid to miss the flights.
Scott (SANspotter)
Hi Juliet! Nope, no additional security checks will be required. You’ll be free to move between all terminals at DFW without restriction, so 55 minutes is going to be easy.
Have a good trip!
Juliet
thank you Scott
Jari
Hi, and thanks for an informative blog!
I’m planning an international flight for Thursday July 6: Helsinki – DWF (Finnair) and DWF – Seattle (American Airlines). Finnair site is suggesting me a 1h 35min layover with the AA connection flight leaving for Seattle at 4:40 pm.
What are your two cents? 🙂
Scott (SANspotter)
Hi Jari – it’s probably going to be a little tight, but I think you’re going to be fine. Especially since both segments are part of the same ticket (which means that you’ll receive your boarding pass for your Seattle flight when you check in before departing Helsinki).
It’ll also protect you if you end up missing your connection to Seattle. If that happens, you’ll automatically be rebooked on the next available option. FYI, there are a million ways (give or take lol) to get you from Dallas to Seattle on any given day, and American Airlines will find a way to do it as quickly and as easily as possible. Have a great trip!
Jari
Thanks for an informative reply! However, I already picked another option – Alaska Airlines will take me to Seattle a bit later in the evening, so that I will be able to enjoy the amazing DFW for 4h 4min (after all this reading and almost ‘feeling’ the iconic airport now ;)…
Ron McLeod
I am flying on American from Toronto, connecting in DFW to American flight to Mazatlan. Since I am not staying in the US, do I need to go through customs at DFW?
Scott (SANspotter)
Hi Ron – you’ll actually go through US customs and immigration prior to leaving Toronto (it’s called US Preclearance). This way, your flight will arrive into DFW has any US domestic flight would.
Upon arrival at DFW, simply walk to your connecting gate. No security checks or customs required.
Patty
Any thoughts about AA connection times (NYC/Dallas/Aspen) with LUGGAGE?
Scott (SANspotter)
Hi Patty – as long as your luggage is checked all the way through to Aspen, you won’t have to worry about it. American Airlines will transfer luggage to your connecting flight automatically.
DFW is a big airport, and I usually like to have at least one hour between flights. Connections are possible with far less time than that, but having at least an hour will make things far less stressful IMHO.
Patty
Thank you! I have just over an hour. Fingers crossed.
Bobbi
Hi Scott, this was super informative! Sorry if you’ve answered a million similar questions but I’m struggling to find information for this situation.
I want to fly from London Heathrow to Mexico City and the suggested route is American Airlines through DFW with a 1h31m transfer. I will not have checked-in luggage so I won’t need to collect and should get my boarding pass all the way through from Heathrow but I think I still need to go through customs, as Heathrow doesn’t have the pre-clearance, so assuming that will be too short? The next flight is a 6 hour layover and gets me in later than I’d like but would that be a safer option?
Thanks so much!
Scott (SANspotter)
You’re very welcome Bobbi! Yeah, 1 hour and 30 minutes is probably going to be a little tight since you’re going to have to do the full US customs and immigration procedure. It’s not impossible though, so you could book it and hope for the best. Worst case scenario is that they’ll find a seat for you on that later flight.
If you can’t take the risk (and you need to arrive in Mexico City that day or else), there’s nothing wrong with choosing the longer layover. Sure, you might have to wait around a bit, but stress-free travel is priceless IMHO. Good luck!
Terrence
Hi Scott thank you so much for helping everyone!
I am flying with a toddler
departing: Toronto -> Dallas (3 hr layover) -> los cabos
Returning: los cabos -> dallas (1h 33m layover) -> toronto
All flights are on american. For the returning flight is 1.5 hrs enough to get through customs and security to make the flight (all carry on) thx!
Scott (SANspotter)
Hi Terrence – you’re very welcome! You’ll have plenty of time on the way down. No issues there.
An hour and a half on the way back might be a little tight IHMO. You’ll most likely make your connection without any issues, but it will be stressful trying to get through immigration, customs, and then security in that amount of time.
The good news is that American Airlines will automatically rebook you if you don’t make it. DFW is their largest hub, so they’ll have plenty of options to get you to Toronto if you misconnect.
terrence
Thanks Scott, a few follow up questions:
– Does AA usually cover hotel when a connection is missed — in my case, on my return if we miss the connection the next flight to Toronto is in the AM.
– I am assuming it would be unlikely that checked luggage would make it to the appropriate destination on the return given the tight timeline. In scenarios like these do you think its worth placing a bet on extra insurance (ie Bag Delay / Trip Delay) knowing that it will likely happen?
Now that I am typing this it would be easier for all to miss the connection and spend the night in DFW to break up the flights for my kid. Makes it a no brainer if AA will cover hotel. thanks and appreciate your guidance
Scott (SANspotter)
No problem! To answer your questions:
1). Yes, if they can’t get you there in time to make your connection (and there are no other flight options that day), they will pay for a hotel. This is especially convenient at DFW since their are two hotels connected directly to the terminal. That said – waiting in the customer service line to get a hotel voucher can be a slow process, so it’s not a completely pain-free experience.
2). You’d be surprised how quickly they can move baggage between flights at DFW. I’ve had several 35 minute connections there with checked luggage over the years, and the luggage has always made it. They know what they’re doing!
Personally, I am more of a fan of using something like Apple AirTags instead of insurance. With AirTags, I’ll know exactly where my luggage is at all times, and I can point them to it if they claim ignorance. The effort to file an insurance claim isn’t always worth it IMHO.
Zea
Hey Terrance I also have a 1.5 hour layover at DFW which I’m a bit concerned about! How did it go for you and do you have any tips?
I’m going from Japan to DFW to YYZ.
Thanks Scott for all the info, would appreciate your thoughts as well if you have any
David Williams
Hi Scott
Myself and my wife are flying LHR to DFW on BA, then getting an AA transfer to Kansas City
The BA flight arrives 16..50 (Friday afternoon) at Terminal D ?? The AA flight to Kansas City departs 19.49 on the same day
I know we will need to collect luggage, clear customs, security etc from the LHR flight, and then re check on to the AA flight
What is the “plan” for clearing security, and the best / quickest way to transfer between terminals ?
Many thanks
Scott (SANspotter)
Hi David – The best plan will be not to look at your watch as you’re standing in line waiting to get through customs and immigration. 🙂
You’ll have 2 1/2 hours though, so you’re not likely to have any issues. The train is (by far) the fastest way to move between terminals at DFW!
Emily
Hi! This is super helpful, thank you for writing this. We’re traveling from SLC to Cabo San Lucas connecting at DFW, on American Airlines. We have a 3 hour plus layover so from your information it seems that’s enough time (if all goes to plan!). Do you know if we have to collect our bags and recheck them? Or if they’re transferred? I’m not a lover of flight connections so don’t do it very often!
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks
Scott (SANspotter)
Hi Emily – you’re very welcome! Three hours is going to be a piece of cake. Your luggage will transfer automatically, so you won’t have to do anything. It’ll simply be a matter of walking from one gate to the next (with no need to go through security either). Have a great trip!
Derek
Hi Scott! My wife and i are flying from Vegas into DFW and arriving at 3:13 Pm and then depart for Tampa at 411PM so only a 58 minute layover. Is this enough time? I don’t know the gate we are flying into yet and departing from i guess my only worry is how long is the taxi time at DFW? This has just been really stressing me out the last couple days as Ive been thinking about it. We fly AA in and depart on a AA flight do you think the gates could possibly be in the same terminal? Thanks a ton!
Scott (SANspotter)
Hi Derek – you’ve got nothing to worry about. 58 minutes is going to be easy! All terminals are connected behind the security checkpoint at DFW, so it won’t matter what terminal you arrive and depart from. Not only that, there is an inter-terminal train which will allow you to move from terminal to terminal (across the entire airport) in mere minutes.
It’ll be easy, I promise. Have a great trip!
Mary
Hi, We are scheduled to fly from GUA (Guatemala City) to MSN (Madison, WI) via DFW on American. We have only 1 hour 20 minutes between flights, so I am concerned. We do have global entry to help get through customs and security a bit quicker, but will have checked luggage. Is that going to be too tight of a connection?
Scott (SANspotter)
Hi Mary – even with Global Entry it’s going to be a little tight. That said, you’ll most likely make it as long as your inbound flight arrives on time (or close to it). Global Entry is the thing that’s going to make this possible IMHO, as I don’t think you’d stand a chance without it.
Mary
Thanks so much for your insight! We greatly appreciate it. I don’t like to stress in airports, so I may search out a different flight. This is incredibly helpful as we’ve never been to DFW airport.
Kat
Scott, thank you for the wonderful article. Do I have this right? American Airlines flights with 1 checked luggage, 1 carry-on, and 1 small backpack from Birmingham, AL to DFW then DFW to Incheon South Korea – No need to go through passport control, security/screen carry-on, nor retrieve checked luggage/recheck luggage in DFW International Terminal. But on return flight ICN to DFW, I must go through passport control, get checked luggage from baggage claim, go through customs, and recheck bag with American airlines at DFW and then get connecting flight to BHM? Thank you Scott.
Scott (SANspotter)
You’re very welcome Kat – you’ve got it exactly right! You’ve described it so perfectly that I’m thinking that maybe you should be helping people here in the comment section instead of me. 🙂
Have a great trip to Korea!
Kat
Thank you Scott!
Michelle
Hi Scott, thank you for your informative article.
First, I will be flying from Singapore to Tokyo (JAL/AA), and then I will be departing from Tokyo to DFW (AA) with 2hrs 40mins connection time before my next flight from DFW to FLL (AA).
It will be my first time in DFW. I only have a carry-on bag.
I do not have the information on arrival/departure terminal yet. Kindly advise the following:
1) Will the 2hrs 40mins connection time at DFW be sufficient to catch my domestic flight to FLL?
2) AA has changed my connection time from a comfortable 4hrs to 2hrs 40mins, and it will be the last flight of the day.
3) After going through the security checkpoint and customs, what is the fastest way to get to the Domestic Terminal to catch my connecting flight to FLL? I am perfectly fine with walking.
Thank you very much.
Scott (SANspotter)
You’re very welcome Michelle! 2 hours and 40 minutes won’t be a problem at all – especially since you won’t have any checked luggage to contend with. Unless your inbound flight from Tokyo is massively delayed, you won’t have any issues at all.
Getting back into the terminal after clearing customs is extremely easy. No matter what terminal you arrive at (it’ll most likely be the international terminal), go through the nearest security checkpoint that you see. All terminals are connected behind the security checkpoint at DFW, so it doesn’t matter where you enter. Once inside, moving between terminals is quick and easy with the inter-terminal train.
Have a great trip!
Michelle
Thank you Scott for your prompt response.
Ray
Hello Scott. My AA flight from Belize arrives DFW at 5:30PM and my AA connecting flight leaves from a different terminal at 7PM. I don’t have Global Entry but I have only a carry-on bag. What do you think my chances are of making this connection? Thanks for your help.
Scott (SANspotter)
Hi Ray! As long as the line to get through passport control isn’t ridiculously long, you’ll make it no problem. Sure, DFW is a really big airport, but I consider it to be one of the easiest to transit in the US.
Good idea to go carry-on only by the way. That will save you a lot of time.
Katy
Great article, really helpful. We’re due to fly AA from XNA to DFW then on to LHR. Connection time is 45 mins. Is that too tight? Looking at recent flights the incoming seems to be around gate B37 and outgoing at D24.
Scott (SANspotter)
Hi Katy – honestly, no matter where your incoming and outgoing gates are, 45 minutes will be enough to do a domestic to international connection. DFW is massive (and can be intimidating), but it’s super easy to get from one end to the other in a matter of minutes via the inter-terminal train. You’ll be fine!
Christoph
Thanks for the Article. I want to fly from Mexico City to New Orleans and most flights have really short layover in DFW e.g. 1h25min do you think such a connecting time is possible?
Scott (SANspotter)
You’re very welcome Christoph! 1 hour and 25 minutes would be too short for me – I wouldn’t do it. The lines for passport control and immigration at DFW can get long at times!
That said, I’m sure it’s a doable connection if everything goes right.
Also, you will automatically be rebooked to a later flight if you end up missing your connection. So it could be worth it if you don’t have any other options.
Angie
This is so, so helpful. Looking at PDX-DFW-MSY on AA next April, and I was worried about the 40-minute “layover” they’ve got between flights. I think I could do it solo, but my in-laws will be with us. They are still quite agile, but are nervous travelers. So, as the trip “leader” I’m trying to gauge how nervous I should be or not. I want to put them at ease. I knew we can get lucky and have the connection in the same concourse, but I’m trying to gauge what would happen if we had to hustle across the airport. I mean, we’re talking 40 minutes from touch down to take off. Doesn’t the plane need to taxi for like 10 mins? lol! Plus, I think my in-laws will be checking bags. I guess we’ll bring good snacks and use the airplane lavatory before landing, since we’ll have to move quickly!
I know there’s another AA DFW-MSY flight that evening. After reading this, it sounds like AA will have us covered in case we misconnect. This page is officially bookmarked! Thank you for helping someone who went to DFW once, circa 10 years ago! Lifesaver!
Scott (SANspotter)
Hi Angie! 40 minutes is a bit of a gamble with nervous in laws in tow (lol), but you’d be surprised how easy it is to get from one end of DFW to the other at a normal walking pace. The inter-terminal train can be a lifesaver!
Having checked luggage or not won’t matter, since that’ll be for American Airlines to worry about. Not you (since you won’t have to retrieve it during your layover).
And yes, AA isn’t going to leave you hanging out to dry if for whatever reason you miss your connection. They’ll get you to New Orleans ASAP (even if it means being put on a different airline).
Good luck!
Greg
Hi Scott, great article! We are flying from SFO to CUN via DFW. The original flight times changed. Current departure options include a 1 hr 20 min layover or a 3 hr 20 min layover in DFW. Which would you recommend? Thanks for your help.
Scott (SANspotter)
Thanks Greg! Honestly, 1 hour and 20 minutes will be more than enough time to get from one plane to the other at DFW without any issues at all. I’d recommend the longer layover if you want to have enough time to get something to eat though.
neil
Hi, we fly to Vegas in May via DFW from LHR, we have a stop over of 1hr 50mins. Not sure what will happen at DFW, we don’t travel a lot, this trip is for our honeymoon, is that enough time to get to our connecting flight? Flying with AA. Will be the same again on way home, Vegas to DFW then onto LHR with another 1hr 50min stop over time.
Scott (SANspotter)
Congrats Neil! You’re going to have to go through the full US customs and immigration process upon arrival at DFW (which will require retrieving your luggage). Afterwards, you’ll have to recheck your luggage with American Airlines and go through the security checkpoint to get back into the terminal. Two hours will more than likely be enough time, but you’ll have to move quickly.
Going home will be a lot easier. You won’t have to do anything at DFW except walk to your connecting gate. You won’t even have to go through security. Have a great trip!
Amanda
Hi there. I am flying Auckland to La . La to Dallas . Dallas to Dublin. I have only 1 hour 4 mins layover in Dallas from the domestic flight to international flight. I am flying American airlines with all flights. Am I going to have enough time?
Scott (SANspotter)
Hi Amanda – that’s quite the journey! Yes, one hour and 4 minutes is plenty of time to make a domestic to international connection at DFW. You won’t have to go through security, but you might have to change terminals (which is quick and easy via the enter terminal train). Have a good trip!
Patrick
I have a 40 minute gap between flights for my trip next year with a layover at DFW and it’s a domestic flight. I am nervous about it but your post here is giving me hope…
Scott (SANspotter)
Yeah Patrick, you’ll be fine! 40 minutes is a perfectly doable connection at DFW as long as your inbound flight is on time.
Ashley
Hi Scott!
Traveling with a toddler and checked luggage:
MIA-> DFW-> YYC (1hr 11min layover in DFW)
AND
YYC-> DFW->MIA (1hr 36min layover in DFW)
Do you think this would be possible or am i crazy?
Scott (SANspotter)
Hey Ashley! That doesn’t sound crazy to me at all. You won’t have to worry about your checked luggage (since it will transfer automatically), and anything more than an hour is what I would consider an easy connection at DFW.
On the way back, you actually go through US customs and immigration prior to departing YYC. This means that you won’t have to do anything upon arrival at DFW except walk to your connecting gate (and entertain a toddler lol). Have a great trip!

Hi
We are flying back from rome on BA 1 hr 45 min layover in DFW then then have us on AA to sfo. We will have a checked bag. Is this doable.? I booked the entire trip through BA
Scott (SANspotter)
Hi Sue – one hour and 45 minutes is pretty easy for an international domestic connection at DFW on AA/BA. As long as your inbound flight is relatively close to on time (and the lines for passport control and customs aren’t ridiculous), you’ll have plenty of time to spare. You don’t have much to worry about IMHO.

Hi Scott,
I’m travelling from London, UK to Mexico via Dallas. Long overnight layover in Dallas which can’t be avoided. I don’t know which terminals I’ll be arriving and leaving from, I presume terminal D. Thinking of booking a Minute Suite so that I can get some rest. Presume I should try and book the one in Terminal D? Also how does it work after clearing passports, baggage and customs, will I still be in the Terminal and able to get to the Minute Suite or will I have exited and have to check in again? Thanks for your help.
Scott (SANspotter)
Hi! Honestly, it doesn’t really matter because once you exit customs, you’ll be landside (in the unsecure arrivals area). You might as well book an off property hotel at that point, because I’m not sure that you’ll be able to get back into the terminal for a flight departing the next morning.
If you’re willing to spend a little more, the Grand Hyatt connected directly to the airport is a pretty nice place to stay.
Audrilee
Good morning Scott- we arrive at DFW on American from Fresno CA with only 1 hour between international flight on American to FCO – from what I have read on this site we should be okay if the flight is on time? Thank you so much for you help with this!
Scott (SANspotter)
Good morning Audrilee! Yup, you shouldn’t have any issues assuming that your inbound flight isn’t massively delayed. It’ll be a very easy transfer IMHO.
Matthew
Hi Scott – what a great article. Flying into DFW with a 42 minute layover to lax. It looks like it would normally fly in to terminal B and then leave from terminal C. I made sure to get seats as close the front of the plane as possible on the first flight. Should I be concerned about the flight to lax closing the gate or leaving early? Thanks so much!!!
Scott (SANspotter)
You’re very welcome Matthew! No, they won’t close it up early if they know they still have connecting passengers coming from other flights. 42 minutes will be fine – even if you have to trek all the way across the entire airport.
FYI, if you only have to move between adjacent terminals (say, B and C), walking will get you there on time. I’d use the inter-terminal train for anything else. Have a good trip!

hi Scott
on the one ticket, can we check the bags to final destination , and how do we check if the planes are using the same terminal…not much time to change planes.

Hi Louise – yes, you will be able to check your luggage all the way through to Aspen when you check in at the New Orleans airport. You won’t have to worry about it during your connection at DFW – it’ll transfer automatically.
You will very likely have to change terminals at DFW, but it’s a very fast and easy process. I’ve done 30 minute connections there before (ones that involved terminal changes) without any issues.
In the days leading up to your trip, you can use any flight tracking app to see what terminals your flights typically arrive at and depart from. I use Flighty for this sort of thing.
Have a great trip!
Katie
All these tips are so helpful!
We are flying from Dub (Ireland) to Cancun (Mexico) with a 1hour 10 min stopover in Dallas. Do you think that is enough time or should we opt for a longer stopover? We are flying with American Airlines.
Scott (SANspotter)
Hi Katie – definitely go for a longer layover! You’ll have to go through the full US customs and immigration process at DFW (which is admittedly stupid, but them’s the rules lol).
Any layover longer than two hours would be sufficient. Three hours would give you a completely stress-free transfer IMHO. Have a great trip!
Katie
Thanks Scott! We actually have US pre-clearance in Dublin which I think means we do not need to do it on arrival in Dallas, would this make a difference?
Scott (SANspotter)
Oof! I can’t believe that I forgot about that lol. Yes, you will go through US Preclearance prior to departing Dublin. In that case, yes, 1 hour and 10 minutes is going to be more than enough time. You won’t have any issues at all. Have a great trip!
Jeanne Hahn
Hi Scott,
Thank you for this article. I am flying into DFW with Qatar and connect to AA domestic and only given 1.5 hours connecting time. I have US passport and TSA pre-check. Do you think that is enough time to connect? Thank you so much!
Scott (SANspotter)
Hi Jeanne – you’re very welcome! If it were me, I’d prefer to have at least two hours to allow for any delays. You’ll be fine though. Don’t expect to have a lot of time left over by the time you reach your connecting gate – so try to get through passport control and customs as quickly as you can.
Catherine
This is helpful! We have a connection back from RTB->DFW->SAN with 1:40 layover and are definitely carrying on and have global entry and will be at the front of the plane. Let’s see how fast my 5-year-old can run while towing his suitcase 😉
The only bummer is to get from SAN to DFW to connect outbound to central or South America these days it seems like you have stay overnight in Dallas, there is totally room for improvement on AA’s part here. No one wants in San Diego to go to MIA to fly south.
Scott (SANspotter)
Thanks Catherine! Sounds like you need to get your 5 year old doing 5am drills with a 40lb suitcase (uphill, into the wind) to prepare for this connection. (lol) Then again, with the amount of energy that kids of that age have, I don’t think you’re going to have any issues. One hour and 40 minutes will be a challenge, but it’s totally doable.
And I totally hear you about making connections to South America from San Diego. I’ve connected south through both Los Angeles and Miami, and LAX was by far the most convenient. Tijuana (via the CBX) is an option as well!
Janiece
Thanks for your article that I found very helpful. Still have a question: AA just changed my flight from JFK NY to DFW now with 1 hour 11 minutes connection for Qantas to MELBOURNE, Australia. Will be my first time in DFW. (I have tried to change the AA flight as first time in DFW but no success to date). Do think I have enough time? Thank you.
Scott (SANspotter)
You’re very welcome Janiece! That’s plenty of time IMHO. DFW is a big airport (and American Airlines operates out of multiple terminals), but moving between each terminal is fast and easy via the connecting train. The best part? You won’t have to go through any security or customs checkpoints.
Have a great trip!
Arlette
Hi Scott,
Thanks for your helpful article. I will be flying LHR->DFW->SFO in September and I know that I will have to pick up my luggage and then recheck it. My question is, will I be able to open my luggage to either take something out or to put something in before I recheck it?
Scott (SANspotter)
You’re very welcome Arlette! Yes – because it will be your responsibility to take your luggage to the customs checkpoint (and then recheck it), you’ll have full access to it. You can do whatever you want. Have a great trip!
Aren
Hey Scott, I would be flying from SJC -> DFW -> LHR in Mid December. (transiting at DFW with a layover time of 1hr11mins) Would I have to check out my luggage and re-check them back in and would there be enough time for me to transit to my flight from DFW to LHR? I would be flying with American Airlines.
Thanks for the help!
Scott (SANspotter)
Hi Aren – if the entire journey is all part of the same ticket, then no. You will not have to retrieve (and recheck) your luggage at DFW. You’ll have plenty of time for the connection. Have a great trip!
Betty
I will be flying from MSP to Mexico . My connection flight is in Dallas with only 40 min layover not sure if this is enough time . Will be having my
Kiddos with . Do you advise I check my stroller or at the gate ?
Scott (SANspotter)
Hi Betty – 40 minutes will be enough. Be sure to use the inter-terminal train if you have to change terminals.
And no, I do not recommend gate checking the stroller since you’ll have to wait for it after deplaning from MSP. You’re not going to have a lot of time to stand around and wait!
